Muharram procession road in shambles, devotees annoyed
SYED IMRAN ALI HAMDANI
Srinagar, Nov 12: Resentment is brewing among the residents of Mohalla Syed Afzal, Madeen Sahib, Ali Pora and Zadibal in Shaher-e-Khaas against the authorities for failing to repair roads in the area through which the Muharram processions are scheduled to traverse in the coming days.
Expressing serious concern over the “poor civic conditions in the area” ahead of the Muharram, the devotees said “it speaks sorry state of the affairs.”
A delegation from the areas told Greater Kashmir that authorities took up construction of drainage work few months back. “But the work has been going on at snail’s pace. All roads have been dug up and it is difficult to walk,” the complainants said adding the government should have taken into consideration that the road caters to Muharram processions.
“The authorities are adopting dilly dallying attitude towards undertaking of repair of roads from where all the Muharram processions will be taken out,” said Jehangir Ahmad Rather a local flanked by others.
The complainants accused the authorities of “failing to take note of the fact that thousands of people take part in the Muharram processions.” They said works undertaken at the eleventh hour result in wastage of funds and quality is also not up to the mark. “This is the reason why roads develop cracks within months,” he added.
When contacted an R&B official said the road would be repaired in two days.
