34 fresh dengue cases in Delhi
New Delhi, Nov 14: The total number of dengue cases in the national capital rose to 1,535 Wednesday with 34 more people testing positive for the mosquito-borne disease, official data revealed.
Of the new cases, 15 were reported from areas in South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC), 10 from North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC), and nine from the East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC), the data showed.
Since dengue hit the capital this year, SDMC has reported 580 dengue cases -- the largest among all civic agencies.
There have been four deaths so far.
In 2011, a total of 956 dengue cases were reported in Delhi, down from a total of 5,936 cases in 2010.
Officials said the unusually high figure in 2010 followed much construction activity in the city in preparation of the Commonwealth Games, which caused stagnant pools of water and influx of labourers from neighbouring states.
Dengue fever is a communicable disease, and its symptoms include high fever for four to five days, usually accompanied by severe headache, pain in the eyes, muscle and joint pain and rashes. After the fever goes away, the blood platelet count starts dipping -- this is the most dangerous phase of the disease. IANS
