Maternity hospital Wayil sans medicare facilities

Patients suffer, authorities mute

Wayil (Ganderbal): Signifying messy state of affairs in Kashmir’s healthcare system, the mini- maternity hospital at Wayil here sans basis medicare facilities coupled with shortage of medicos and paramedics causing immense problems to the patients.
Construction of the hospital faced a roller-coaster ride for nearly eight years. The hospital was finally constructed last year at a cost of Rs 1.76 crore. The mini-maternity hospital functioning in a Panchayat Ghar here was shifted to the new building in May this year.
However in absence of proper facilities, doctors and paramedics, the patients face difficulties and are forced to move to hospitals in Ganderbal and Srinagar
“Not a single diagnostic facility is available in the hospital. Ironically the hospital is locked after 4 pm. This hospital has been turned into a mere day care dispensary,” said Nazir Ahmad Rather, a shopkeeper near the hospital.
Locals said in absence of proper medical facilities at the hospital the maternity patients of Sonamarg have to travel nearly 100 Kilometers to reach Lal Ded Maternity hospital in Srinagar. “This sometimes proves fatal for the patients,” they said.
The hospital has just a doctor, a nursing orderly and a FMPHW worker and they attend their duties hardly for few hours. “This contradicts the Government’s claims of providing best healthcare facilities to people particularly in rural areas,” said Ghulam Nimbi a local.
Locals said proper functioning of the Maternity hospital at Wayil Ganderbal would ease huge rush of the maternity patients from the area.
When contacted the Deputy Commissioner Ganderbal Showkat Ahmad Mir said necessary medicare facilities, doctors and paramedical staff would be soon deputed to the hospital.
“The hospital has not been inaugurated officially. We are trying our best to provide every possible facility in the hospital before its inauguration” the DC said.
