Mistaken identity triggers drama

KHALID GUL/SHOWKAT DAR

Pulwama/Islamabad, Nov 14: The mistaken identity of the militant killed in an encounter in Kulgam on Tuesday triggered high drama in south Kashmir Wednesday. The militant was earlier identified by police as Showkat Ahmad Tak of Panzgam, Pulwama.
Police sources said the body of the slain militant was taken to Panzgam, Tuesday night; however the family whom the militant was believed to be from did not identify him as Showkat.
“The family said that Showkat has a visible mark on his back which was not there on the body,” police sources said.
The body was then taken to many villages of Pulwama and Islamabad as it was not identified by anybody. Later the militant was identified in Chanigam Arwani by Ghulam Hassan Mir as his son Shabir Ahmad Mir. Shabir was associated with Lashkar-e-Toiba.
Strong protests rocked the area as thousands of people including men, women and children assembled outside the house of the slain militant. The protesters raised anti-India and pro-freedom slogans. Thousands of people participated in the funeral prayers of the militant and a spontaneous strike was observed in the area.
“Shabir was a category-A militant and was involved in the killing of a Sarpanch in Howura Mishpora village of Kulgam district. He was also involved in issuing threats to Panchayat representatives in Kulgam district asking them to quit,” police sources said.
They further said that Shabir was also involved in the snatching of a rifle from two policemen in Kulgam district last year.
