Respect woman
This refers to the article “Eve’s honor” by Hassan Zainagiree (GK Nov 02).Women in contemporary society are faced with various issues and challenges which make them vulnerable and many a times an easy prey to several atrocities. Despite living in an era of self-acclaimed emancipation and empowerment, women still continue to face discrimination and abuses. Even today, they are required to strive for the upkeep of their dignity and honour. Sexual harassments are becoming increasingly common, which not only prove excruciating for the victims but also weakens the moral fabric of our society. The alarming increase in the incidence of rapes is saddening and a flagrant violation of women’s rights.
But it would be unwise to pronounce the dress and behaviour of women as the major cause of sexual harassments. Researches have revealed that rapes occur because of several factors, which include lack of moral education, psychopathy, sadism, anger, sexual pleasure, alcohol and drug consumption, physical and social environment etc. Psychological factors are known to be one of the leading causes. At times, the aim is simply to humiliate, debase or hurt the victim and assert competence, strength, authority and capability. A sadist, rapist finds the intentional maltreatment of his victim intensely gratifying and takes pleasure in the victim’s torments, anguish, distress, helplessness and suffering.
Ruling out the dress and behaviour of victim as a cause of sexual abuse does not mean advocating the use of revealing or provocative clothes. Islam has made adherence to Hijab mandatory for all women. Hijab symbolizes modesty, morality and chastity. It gives women an air of authority, dignity and respect, besides being an act of obedience to Allah. Those women who do not observe proper hijab are blatantly defying the commandment of Allah (SWT) and His beloved Prophet (PBUH). Let’s ensure and provide a haven of dignity and reverence to our women and allow them to survive in security and without any apprehension.
