‘Strengthen bunds to prevent floods’
Kupwara: Inhabitants of many flood prone villages on banks of streams in this frontier district have demanded immediate flood protection measures.
Incessant rains cause floods in many streams including Hayhama, Kalaroos, Khurhama, Warnow, Kehmil, Nallha-e-Hud, Mawar and Kohru and damages orchards and agricultural fields.
“Besides floods cause soil erosion on bunds abutting villages in catchments of these streams,” the locals said.
They said 15 persons were drowned in gushing waters of these streams in past decade.
”In absence of measures to prevent flood waters from entering these villages many families were forced to migrate to safer places. It is high time for the authorities to strengthen bunds near these streams to save our life and property,” they added.
