The Gaza invasion

As the Palestinian bid for the recognition of the Palestinian state by the United Nations' General Assembly nears, Israeli threats are now manifesting in the devastating onslaught on Gaza, reeling under years of economic embrago nd isolation by Israel. So far 18 Palestinian civilians have been killed in the Israeli air and missile strikes, including many women and children. Enhancing its pressure on the Palestinian Authority based in the West Bank, Israel has also hinted that the Palestinian UN bid would even make it to intrude into the West Bank and topple the Mahmud Abbas led government there by force. This is a highly dangerous situation and goes to prove once again Israel's brazen disregard of the international law and the popular support to Palestinian cause in the UN General Assembly. Even as Israel and some segments of the western media, highly sympathetic to its version of the story, would make the world believe that the ongoing Israeli invasion of Gaza comes as a retaliation to the home-made rockets fired from Gaza into what Israel calls its territory, the fact remains that this Israeli tactic is designed to distract Palestinian and the international attention from the likely UN vote for Palestine which is expected to receive widespread support from the UN members. Given the perils of a full blown ground invasion of Gaza by Israel, it is time for the international community to not only denounce but also stop this latest Israeli aggression against hapless Gaza. It is hoped that Tel Aviv and its backers in Washington appreciate that the situation has changed in the Middle East in recent years, much to Israel's strategic disadvantage. Further deaths and destruction in Gaza could fuel the unrest beyond Palestinian borders, spiral out of control in unimaginable ways and imperil peace in the region and beyond.
