Will support NC, Congress in LC polls if Qasim, Masrat released: Er Rashid

Assures Support To PDP If Party Brings Resolution Seeking Clemency For Guru

SHABIR IBN YUSUF

Srinagar, Nov 18:  Independent legislator and MLA Langate Er Rashid Sunday asked the coalition partners—National Conference and Congress—to “release political prisoners like Dr Muhammad Qasim Faktoo and Masrat Alam” if they want his support in the upcoming Legislative Council polls.
Addressing a press conference here, he said that coalition partners approached him for his support to the candidates they have fielded in the LC polls slated to be held on December 3. “I told them that I am ready to support their candidates subject to release of political prisoners including Dr Faktoo, Masrat Alam, Ghulam Qadir Bhat, Tariq Dar,” Er Rashid said.
Rashid said the Government should withdraw all cases against youth allegedly involved in stone pelting since 2008.
“If State and Central Government claim that 90 percent people have voted in the recent Panchayat elections, then they should not be afraid in fighting people like Dr Faktoo and Masrat Alam politically,” he said, adding, “It should be left to the people of the state with which ideology they want to subscribe to and support.”
Er Rashid slammed Dr Meboob Beg’s statement on Dr Faktoo’s release. “There cannot be a bigger joke than this. Dr Beg is a part of National Conference which is a coalition partner in J&K and he can pursue the Government to release him rather than just talking about it,” he said.
Er Rashid criticized coalition for politicizing Panchayat institutions by nominating candidates from political parties for the upcoming Legislative polls. He asked all the concerned quarters that Panchs and Sarpanchs should be seen as “pure Kashmiri nationalists” as they have also “sacrificed a lot” during ongoing struggle for the resolution of Kashmir issue.
Er Rashid offered his support to Peoples Democratic Party in the upcoming LC polls if the party was ready to bring resolution in the upcoming session seeking clemency for Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru in the same manner like Tamil Nadu Assembly did in case of Nalini and others in Rajiv Gandhi assassination case.
He expressed surprise over the remarks by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah asking Parvez Musharraf if Pakistan was sincere in resolving Kashmir issue.
“Omar should ask that question to himself and government of India as Pakistan has always supported Kashmiris on all fronts for resolution of issue,” he said.
