Garbage takes sheen off Pulwama
Municipal Authorities In Slumber
Pulwama: Inhabitants of Pulwama are up in arms against the authorities for failing to provide basic civic amenities saying it causes immense inconvenience to them.
In absence of proper garbage disposal mechanism, a famous stream Dhodh kul (stream) here has turned into a garbage dump. Few decades ago Dhodh kul possessed crystal clear waters. However failure of the authorities to provide garbage disposal has taken a heavy toll on the stream.
“Till few decades ago we used to bath in this stream. Ironically this stream has now been turned into main dumping site for garbage generated in the town. This has drastically affected flora and fauna and circulation of the stream,” the locals.
They said the pungent smell emanating from the stream causes immense inconvenience to them.
“The garbage dumps in the stream have become breeding ground of mosquitoes and parasites,” said Muzzafar Ahmad, a shopkeeper.
The stream flows through the main town and most of the shops and business establishments are located on either side.
Health experts warn that the presence of tons of garbage in the town can pose a threat to the inhabitants. “Heaps of garbage in the town is harmful for people especially students and children as it can cause various diseases among them. The garbage should be lifted and scientifically dumped far away from human habitations,” said Dr Rashid Ahmad, a local medico.
When contacted the Executive Officer Pulwama Municipal Committee, Anis Chowdary, acknowledged the problem.
“We don’t have big dust bins in the town as a result people face problems to dump the garbage. We have sanctioned new bins for Pulwama and the installation would be undertaken in a week. We would soon take measures to clean the Dhodh kul,” he added.
