The ocean of spiritual knowledge

Mirza Akamal ud Din Kamil was a spiritual disciple of Rumi and Attar

His ancestors were the descendants of Sultan Kwaja Ahamd Yesvi, fifteenth offspring of Hazrat Imam Azam (RA). His grandfather Muhammad Quli Khan migrated from Tashqand to Badakhshan and then moved down to Delhi. Muhammad Quli Khan became the governor of Kashmir from 999 to 1010 Hijra (1590 to 1601 A.D) during the reign of Akbar. He died in Srinagar and is buried in the vicinity of Sangin Darwaza, outside the wall of the Naagar Narar fort. Muhammad Quli Khan’s son Mirza Adil Beg Khan settled in Kashmir. Adil was esteemed in Shah Jhan’s times. The youngest son of Adil Khan was born in 1644 A.D.(1054 Hijri). Shah Jahan happened to be in Kashmir at that time and the Mughal king named the baby as Kamil Beg Khan. The Mirza’s education was entrusted to Allma Abul Fath Kallu Kalashpuri. Rescinding all royal privileges, he became a disciple of Khawaja Habib ul Lah Nowsheri (R.A) at a tender age of twelve years.
Akmal authored Bahrul Irfan in four volumes consisting of 80,000 couplets following the Masnavi of Moulana Jalal ud Din Rumi (RA). He says that he wished to write a masnavi and he saw Khawaja Farid ud Din Attar (R.) with a book in his hand. Akmal asked him about the book and Attar replied that this was his Bahrul Irfan, reciting five couplets from it. As he woke up, he found the five recited couplets well memorized. During the course of compiling the masnavi Akmal says he saw Moulan Jalal ud din Rumi and Farid ud din Attar. He further says that he experience wajd as the two introduced themselves to him. As he recovered, he recited the following verse:
Az muridani Shiekh Attaram
Istianant az Moulvi Darm
He is a murid of Sheikh Attar and he solicited aid from Moulana Rumi
Besides a Qasdia Mukhbirul Asrar, comprising three hundred couplets and some books are attributed to the sufi. The chief features of Akmal’s poetry are that his examples, similes, metaphors, stories and references are indigenous. He left for heavenly abode in 1718AD (1132 Hijri) and his tomb is at Hawal, Srinagar.
Akmaluddin yaqeen hamen dard
Mazhabsh wahdat ast we yaktaie
(Akaml ud Din has the firm belief that the religion (of Allah) is monotheism and unity.
