Where has our morality gone?

Eve-teasing prevails while City helplessly remembers victims like Romana Javed. Comments Dr Fiaz Fazili

Eve-teasing is declining to recede, much like the undue pampering of youth by their parents. A latest complaint of eve-teasingwas reported by City Page, a few days back. It straight reminded me of the death of teenager Roomana Javed a few years back. Her tragedy we all know. It still sends shivers down the spines. But then eve-teasing continues to prevail.
This is despite the fact that women in traditionally modest society of ours occupied a very special position and respect. She is important in every role, be it a mother, daughter, wife or a sister. Morality is a quality that was highly valued by all traditional cultures or faiths in Kashmir. Alas! People have become indifferent to social crime scenes. The wayward youth keep standing outside the  gates  of schools or colleges  only to pass  ribald comments, wolf-whistles, coarse laughter etc. Eve-teasing is tormenting free life of women. What is depressing is that eve-teasing was previously done by uneducated miscreants, but now even educated indulge in the crime.
The question is –how long women be subjected to such uncivilized and inhuman behaviour almost daily? For how many generations will parents keep on passing the same advice – to their daughters of keeping calm in public, avoiding vulnerable areas infested with potential harassers.
Well, a lot has already been said about this issue. Time has come that instead of words actions start speaking. A lot of blame game has been played; Under public and media cry following tragic incidents, sufferings of  our Princesses of Haya on  so called  “Oxford Street” of ours around Barzulla –Hyderpora  stretch of the Airport Road which is a hub of coaching centres, had introduced many strategies to curb this menace. But unfortunately such actions  vanished with time. Agreed that one cannot wait for the police to be on vigil at every street every corner all the time awaiting acts of eve- teasing, but the fact is that not many eve-teasers are brought to book. It's not only police's duty to protect women but also our collective moral duty, social obligation to stop eve teasing and help women in tough situations.
Each family is endeavored to ensure that their children respect their neighbour’s daughter. No doubt Haya –is the priceless ornament of any self-respecting lady, and there is a definite connection between the way we dress and how we think. Dress appropriately sanctioned by our traditional /religious values. Today, my aim is not to  put entirely blame on “dress code” that it is only women in suggestive clothes who are eve-teased .We must realize that eve-teasing  all the times is not about what women wear or where they go and at what time. A comment received in my inbox from an unknown sender read in Urdu, "Nazar Teri Kharaab, Burrka main Pehnoon (Why should I suffer for your bad intentions)?”. Many adults believe that lack of manners, particularly in youth is responsible for such rowdy behaviours. Moral education at home; school can help, civil society has to demonstrate basic civility. There should be bar on Road Romeos outside schools, colleges ,coaching centres. Every person caught eve-teasing should be dealt with in all sternness and there should not be any leniency for offenders. Let all efforts  work synergistically.
