Empower Panchayats
This refers to article "Who discredited whom" by Junaid Azim Mattu (GK, 4/11/12).Government is beating the drum of Panchayati
empowerment without giving powers to these grassroots democratic institutions. The Panchayati elections were held in the state only to befool the common masses. The mainstream political parties are trying hard to exploit these Panchayati members in order to settle their own political ends. The most unfortunate thing is that, Panchayati elections were linked to Kashmir issue. That made Panches and Sarpanches more vulnerable. A large number of Panchayati members have already tendered their resignations. They are pressing for their security. Government should wake up from slumber and announce concrete measures in order to empower these panchayati members. MLAs and MLCs should not become a hurdle in their empowerment.
