After 40 yrs, DYSS scraps annual scholarships; players aghast

ABID KHAN

Srinagar, Nov 8: For the first time in the 40 year history of Department of Youth Services and Sports (DYSS), the national level players and medalists have been refused annual scholarships for their performance.
The scheme to grant/award scholarships to the players who represent State in various School National Games was place from last 40 years. The participants whose number is in hundreds used to be given rupees 1750 each, while as medalists were awarded with rupees 10000 each. This year around 150 players represented DYSS and State in various school national events and among them 20 bagged medals.
However, players who were expecting to get scholarships as usually visited DYSS office they were categorically denied any such award this year by officials there.
“It is irony that DYSS refused to grant scholarships this year. It has been in practice from last 40-years and why they stopped it this year? We fail to understand that,” said one of the players who had been awarded.
“It is my right to get scholarship of worth Rs 10000 as I have bagged medal at national level. If previously practice was in place then why cant they it to me and other players. They can’t do such discrimination with us,” he said.
Players said that in other States players are been encouraged and it is only J&K State where players are discouraged.
“We are not asking for jobs or any undue favour. Scholarships have been in place there from last many years and it is our rite to get it like past players have been getting,” another player said.
“They officials told us that this year no scholarships would be provided as DYSS has got no funds for it. It is irony that they have got money for their useless works but not for the planned scholarship scheme,” he added.
Sources in the DYSS said that department has got separate funds for the scheme and there is no question of using this excuse for the scraping of annual scheme.
“Those who claim that DYSS has not got any funds for the annual scholarship scheme are lying. Government has been sanctioning separate funds for scholarships from last four decades. It is the decision take by non-sports background heads of our department and shortage of funds has nothing to do with it,” sources said.
The players have now requested Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Sports Minister RS Chib to look into the matter.
“In absence of any hope of help from DYSS officials we are pinning all our hopes on Chief Minister and Sports Minister. If they intervene we can get scholarships that are our right,” players added.
Despite repeated attempts Director DYSS JP Singh did not respond to repeated the calls made by Greater kashmir.
