Kupwara reels under darkness
People resent unscheduled power cuts
Kupwara: People of several villages of this frontier district are up in arms against the Power Development Department (PDD) for resorting to unscheduled power cuts.
With the onset of winter unscheduled and long power cuts have become a regular feature in the district. Ironically the PDD officials have failed to notify the revised curtailment schedule.
The locals said even the metered areas of Kupwara town face unscheduled power cuts causing inconvenience to people there.
“For past nearly four weeks power cuts have become more frequent. This has compounded our problems,” they said.
“Despite paying hefty electric bills we face acute shortage of power. The concerned PDD authorities seem to be least bothered about our sufferings,” said Ghulam Ahmad Mir of Kralpora which is without power for past five weeks.
The locals accused the officials posted at the Power Receiving Station Kralpora of deliberately snapping power to the area.
“These officials are posted at the station continuously for last five years. Most of the times they keep the station locked and go to their adjoining native villages which ironically have round the clock power supply,” they said.
Recently the residents of Tikker Kupwara and its adjoining villages staged protest against PDD for resorting to unscheduled power cuts and failing to repair a transformer there.
Unscheduled power cuts have added to woes of the students who are appearing in the ongoing 12th class exams.
