Muhkamat and Mutashabihat

PROF G R MALIK

One of the key Quranic verses reads:
He it is who sent down the Book unto you, in it are verses of clear, established meaning (muhkamat) which constitute the substance and foundation of the Book; and (in it are also) other verses of symbolical and allegorical import (mutashabihat). But those in whose hearts is perversity pursue the allegorical seeking disruption and (final) interpretation of it and Allah Alone knows the final interpretation of it. And those who have profound knowledge say ‘we believe in it, the whole of it is from our Lord and it is only men of understanding who take admonition. (3:7)
The ayah speaks of two forms of the Quranic content. There are verses of established and unambiguous meaning required for spiritual and moral guidance in the affairs of life. And there are other verses generally dealing with matters beyond human reason and these are of necessity allegorical from the human perspective. What is needed for a life of piety and rectitude is a code of clear-cut guidelines and this is ideally contained in Muhkamat. A rightly guided believer does not require anything beyond this to live a virtuous life. The misguided people, however, indulge in pursuing the unknowable and in needless hair-splitting.
There is a whole area of life and reality which reason cannot comprehend in full. Such for instance, are the matters related to the Unseen – God (be He glorified), angels, the Hereafter etc. We have to believe in these things as they are stated in the Revelation without trying to encompass the arational through our feeble reason.  We must always bear in mind what the Prophet (SAW) remarked about one of the most crucial unseen things, Jannah(Paradise), the reward which awaits the rightly guided and pious people in the Hereafter. About Jannah, the Prophet said that it is undefinable in human language. It is something,
“That no eye has seen, no ear has heard of, neither has it occurred to the mind of any human being” (Bukhari and Muslim)
