Gunfight rages in Sopore
CRPF Man Injured
SHABIR IBN YUSUF
Srinagar, Oct 20: A paramilitary CRPF man was injured in an ongoing encounter with militants in north Kashmir’s Sopore area on Saturday, police and reports said.
A police officer told Greater Kashmir that a joint party of forces comprising 22 Rashtriya Rifles (RR), Special Operation Group (SOG) of police and CRPF columns cordoned off Shallpora in old Sopore town this afternoon and launched searches. “Militants present there opened fire which was retaliated triggering an encounter in which a CRPF personnel was injured,” he added.
The officer said that at least two militants are believed to be trapped in the area. “Eight houses are under cordon and the intermittent firing is on,” he added.
He said that Police were following the holed up militants since October 4 after three CRPF men received splinter injuries in a grenade attack on their bunker outside the Sopore bus stand.
Commander 5 Sector RR, Brigadier J B Mathew, who is supervising the operation, said that the area is under cordon. “It is dark and operation will be resumed in the morning,” he said.
The Brigadier refused to comment on the exact number of militants holed up in the area. “Once the operation is over, things will be clear,” he said.
