Soz takes up LPG crisis in JK with PM
Demands Special Provision Of 12 Cylinders Per Family Annually
Srinagar, Oct 20: Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee and Member Parliament Prof Saifuddin Soz on Saturday took up issue of LPG crisis in the State with Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh and made a plea for provision of 12 gas cylinders per family annually as a special consideration.
In a statement a spokesman of Prof Soz said he had earlier discussed increasing cap on LPG in J&K with Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Jaipal Reddy and got his assurance that he would consider this plea sympathetically.
He said Prof Soz apprised Prime Minister of his discussion with Petroleum Minister. He said Prof Soz among other factors explained to the Prime Minister and the Petroleum Minister that J&K deserves special consideration mainly due to hostile weather conditions.
“J&K experiences long spell of cold weather during winter months and therefore adequate provision of gas can bring some relief to them. Besides during the last decade forest cover in J&K has been increased due to the fact that even in borders and the areas closer to forests people have started using gas for cooking purposes and this has visibly reduced dependence on forests for firewood,” Prof Soz said.
“Against this background he (Soz) made a strong plea with the Prime Minister that J&K must receive special attention and 12 gas cylinders be provided to each family annually. Prof Soz also made a plea that non subsidized gas cylinders should also be made available in the market freely and black-market sales should be ruthlessly discouraged and defaulters punished,” the spokesman said.
