Rhetoric won’t Do

That rhetoric is a magic wand that could do miracles in taming the public anger is a self-destructive complacency. So far, the National Conference- Congress alliance leaders instead of seriously addressing the public grievances are indulging in speechifying and issuing of statements. Living in ivory towers the alliance partners are yet to realize the gravity and implications of the volcanic build-up of public anger against the non-performance of the administration. With the time ticking faster for closing of the offices in Srinagar for the annual move to Jammu, the contours of emerging energy and other crisis in Kashmir valley during coming winter months have started becoming distinctly visible. The crisis of shortage of cooking gas has assumed alarming propositions and it is getting on people’s nerves. To impress upon the government to revise its cooking gas policy the traders’ and employees’ organizations observed a complete strike and people in general have also been peacefully demanding for streamlining the distribution system and increasing number of cylinders from six to twelve but so far government has not taken any cognizance of people’s demands. Some unscrupulous agencies are selling LPG cylinders in black at Rs.2000 per cylinder, directly and through touts. The touts are operating outside gas agency offices in full public gaze. Ironically, instead of streamlining the LPG cylinder distribution and restoring home delivery system the authorities are adding to already complicated procedure and deriving sadistic pleasure out of the sufferings of the common people.  The alliance partners instead of working in tandem and impressing upon the central government for a waiver on the subsidized number of LPG cylinder are playing politics and trying to score points over each other. For its climatic conditions with temperature dipping to sub zero the government has a strong case for pleading before the central government for increasing the number of cylinders from six to twelve.  The erratic power supply, with extended unscheduled curtailments has added to the miseries of people. The Power Development Department has not so far explained the erratic and unscheduled power cuts.  It is high time for government to come out of “rhetoric miracle” mindset and address the anger of people before bursts.
