‘KU flagship programs to generate excellence, leadership’

Srinagar, Oct 23:  Prof Talat Ahamd, Vice Chancellor Kashmir University today said the two prestigious Masters Programmers— Travel and Hospitality Management, and Craft Management and Entrepreneurship, launched this year by the varsity are envisioned to generate excellence and leadership.
“The objective of the programmes is to provide best possible education and training, comparable to any premier institution in the country and establish visionary leadership for the growth and development of tourism and craft industry,” he said.
The VC was speaking at a function held at the varsity.
Prof Shabir, Dean Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, KU, appreciated the role of senior faculty members for generating ideas and enormously contributing to the establishment of the two programs.
He said it would not have been possible without the active support and encouragement of the Vice Chancellor.
Professor Shabir giving details of the programmes said, “The Valley which has innumerable natural resources and rich cultural heritage is a world famous tourist attraction. In spite of having tremendous tourism potential we have failed to get our due share of tourist clientele. The reason for this can be cited as many, but one of the major reasons undoubtedly remains the lack of trained and professional manpower in the field of tourism.”
He said the tourism and hospitality management education is of vital importance in developing the requisite manpower in tourism industry.
He added, “Realizing the dearth of educated tourism professionals in Kashmir valley and the vast avenues of employment opportunities available in this field, the University of Kashmir has also decided to introduce a post graduate degree in tourism. The programme is being initiated keeping in view the growing importance of the Tourism Industry.”
“This course is designed with the aim towards fulfilling the requirements for trained and qualified executives for global industry of tourism and taking care of its multifaceted management problems.”
The Master of Travel and Hospitality Management Degree is being started as an Independent course in The Business School of University of Kashmir from the current academic session (2012-13).
He said The Business School of Kashmir University over the years has established a “sound reputation for innovative teaching and research in many functional areas of Business Management, but there is constant endeavour to raise the academic standards of the Institute to new heights and levels of achievements.”
Giving details of another flagship programme is Master in Craft Management and Entrepreneurship, Prof Shabir said, the programme is positioned to deliver a core competence of such nature that is unique and of a market value relevant in regional, national as well as international business context.
