Srinagar, Oct 23: Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) Commissioner Dr GN Qasba’s tour of Srinagar Tuesday to review arrangements for the upcoming festival proved costly for some upcoming illegal constructions which had remained “hidden from the eyes of concerned Ward staffers” only to be spotted by the top official for immediate demolition.
The SMC spokesperson Masrat Yousuf said while driving down Ali Jan road, the Commissioner came across some tall GI sheets which were fencing a compound. Smelling a foul he entered the premises only to find that some illegal construction was going on.
The Chief Khilafwarzi Officer Hakim Aijaz who was accompanying the Commissioner instantly called in bulldozers to get the structure demolished. At least two officers of the concerned Ward were placed under suspension. The SMC officials said the surprise inspections would continue in the coming days as well.
Dr Qasba is understood to have told Hakim Aijaz that surprise inspections were effective to keep check on any illegal constructions, if any.
Meanwhile the Commissioner, flanked by other officials toured old City the Shaher-e-Khaas to take a stock of sanitation and various other arrangements for the upcoming Muslim festival.
At Hazratbal shrine and Jamia Masjid Dr Qasba sought special sanitation drive on Eid-ul-Azha eve. Dr Qasba said similar drivers would be held at other Masjids and shrines as well where Eid prayers are scheduled to be held.
At Lal Bazaar and Saderbal area, he sought installation of four more smart bins while the residents hailed the decision.
During his visit to Jenab Saab Soura, Dr Qasba directed the concerned Xen to get repaired the defunct streetlights before Eid. He also inspected various marketplaces.
