JK susceptible to Dengue

Pilgrims, Tourists, Paramilitary Personnel Source Of Virus In State

Jammu, Oct 23: Jammu and Kashmir is precariously susceptible to ‘Dengue’ virus due to the heavy influx migratory population including tourists, pilgrims, paramilitary personnel and the labourers in the state.
In addition to this, the favorable climatic conditions and the high number of Dengue patients prevalent in the neighboring states like Punjab also push the state even further towards the danger zone of the fatal disease.
Sounding alert, the highly placed sources in the health department informed Greater Kashmir that more than a dozen cases of dengue have been reported in Jammu and Kashmir in recent days. “Though these patients were infected during their visit to the neighboring states, presence of such persons could transmit the disease to other persons – through mosquitoes”.
“Although, the climate of our state is very much suitable for all types of mosquitoes but for ‘Ades Egypti’, the mosquito carrying the Dengue virus, the most suitable period is from August to mid of November. The state also witnesses heavy influx of migratory population in the form of tourists, pilgrims, laborers and paramilitary personnel which further compound the risk of fatal Dengue virus in the state”, they said.
As per the available figures, astonishingly eight cases of Dengue patients have been reported in the state during the last less than two months. Out of these, six have been reported from Jammu while four Dengue patients have been reported from the Valley. But no death due to this deadly virus has so far been reported in the state.
State Malaria officer, Dr Kuldeep Kesar, while confirming the high risk of Dengue in the state, said, “The suitable climate of the state as well as the high number of Dengue patients in the neighboring state, Punjab, have together put the state at a higher risk of Dengue”. He also added, “There is every possibility that more cases of Dengue patients could be reported in the days to come”.
The threat of Dengue virus is more at the time when the number of mosquitoes is on a decline. During this time the activities of mosquitoes are also on the decline in other words their activities become slow. So this is the time when mosquitoes bite more.
Importantly, the mosquitoes carrying Dengue virus bite during day time. More importantly, these mosquitoes ( Ades Egypti) contrary to the general perception, are found in clean water which is mostly available in the houses. Although, this species is different from other mosquitoes but the life span is the same.
The Dengue virus, which was first detected around thirty years back, is found in the humans and the mosquitoes only act as a transmitting medium of transporting the virus from one person to another. Over the origin of Dengue virus, experts informed, “Dengue virus came into being after various viruses over a period of time underwent several changes thus giving rise to a virus named Dengue”.
Over the precautionary measures taken to control the outbreak of Dengue, officials in the health department said, “The department has already initiated awareness campaigns under Information Education and Communication (IEC) programme. We are making the people of the Dengue virus and what precautions are required to be taken to keep the deadly disease away. Apart from this, in ponds and other water bodies we are putting a certain species of fish named ‘Gambicia’. This fish eats up the larva and doesn’t allow mosquitoes to grow”.
Over the symptoms of Dengue, experts informed, “Once infected, the person suffers from high grade fever, which lasts for long. There is acute pain in the body especially in the joints. Apart from this, there is headache and pain in the portion behind the eyes”. The experts also told that Dengue has also the potential of causing multi organ failure. Due to Dengue, The platelet counts in the blood are also minimized and there is internal bleeding also. It may be through urine, stool, hemorrhage or it may be Epistaxix (bleeding through nose), which may ultimately result into the death of a person or he may go in a state of shock.
