Players, JKCA officials exchange blows

RANJI TROPHY SELECTION

ABID KHAN

Srinagar, Oct 23: As if Multi-Score scam was not enough to malign the name of J&K Cricket, the cricketers and J&K Cricket Association (JKCA) officials exchanged blows inside Sher-e-Kashmir Cricket Stadium here on Tuesday.
According to eyewitnesses, JKCA Kashmir Wing had called players for announcement of Kashmir wing selection list for the upcoming Ranji Trophy tournament.
As the cricketers kept waiting outside JKCA office for hours, one of the cricketers went inside to know why it was taking time to announce the list, eyewitnesses said. After he went inside only five minutes later, the sound of glass breaking and notice boards tumbling down from inside was heard, they added.
That followed a stiff argument and exchange of blows between players and the officials including selectors. It was only after Police was called in that matter could be pacified. Both parties were called in Ram Munshi Bagh Police Station.
“We were practising as usual in the nets and in the meanwhile JKCA officials called us for the announcement of list of Kashmir Province probables for Ranji Trophy. We kept waiting outside the office and when results were not announced for long time, I along with another player went inside to enquire about the delay. I asked one of the officials why they are not announcing the list. “ why are you excited, your name is not in the list,” he said. But I responded why cant my name figure in the list as I have been the consistent performer, Suhail Andleep said.
“As I was making my point, one of the selectors and JKCA official pushed me towards the window whose glass panes broke down . Still we didn’t retaliate and headed towards Police station to lodge a complaint. However, we were stopped by the Police as JKCA had brought the issue to the notice of it. Now we both JKCA officials and the players are in the Police station, “he said.
Sources in JKCA said that the culpability rests with either sides as both parties abused and exchanged blows against each other damaging lot of public property.
“It is the dispute over selection and both JKCA and the players should be blamed for the incident. The delay in announcement irked players and they took the matter in their hands,” sources said.
When contacted, JKCA Treasurer, Manzoor Wazir, he denied that anything like exchange of blows happened. “Nothing ugly of such sort happened. Yes, there was heated argument but it can’t be described as exchange of hands,” he said adding the list was with him while as it was being compiled but some players came inside and used foul language which resulted in heated argument between JKCA officials and the players”.
“I am inside police station along with others right now. I am trying to pacify the issue mutually. The negotiations are on to hammer out a solution amicably ,” he added.
When contacted an official of Ram Munshi Bagh Police Station, he said on the condition of anonymity said, “both the parties are inside the station and they have agreed to sort out the issue mutually,”.
Ranji trophy selection is being done by the former International cricketer, Bishen Singh Bedi and main team would be selected at Jammu after the selection of provincial probables.
