Different yardsticks

This refers to the news, "Stake holders pitch for more LPG outlets...." (GK, October 24). In a lighter vein it a curse of special status and may be it was linked to freebees during heydays of militancy. The weaker the movement gets, the tighter the control. Otherwise, apparently there should be no reasons for different yardsticks in the distribution of cooking gas. In Delhi, in the nineties, gas would be delivered at your doorstep just by making a phone call .All one had to do was to give one's consumer number to your area sub-dealer and get a registration number and a probable delivery date depending upon one's turn in the computerized queue one is placed in. In contrast, here in Kashmir we always had to hanker after the gas dealer and pay the delivery charges depending upon the wish of the auto drivers mood; sometimes as high as Rs 20 per cylinder. Now one can only imagine the astronomical savings the distributor would make only on delivery charges which are otherwise included in the rate announced by the company and approved by GOI. This is huge money and that is why authorities here are acting as mute spectators. A recent order by the Hon'ble Supreme Court of India says that the dealer must carry calibrated weighing scale and delver the gas cylinder at consumer’s home.
