Srinagar, Oct 29: It were Afghans ruling the Radio Kashmir Srinagar auditorium Monday afternoon as a world famed Sufi music group from the neighboring country performed at the show amid applauds from audience.
The Kabul based Ahmed Shaam Sufi Group mesmerized the audience with the magical performance at the event organized by the recently established state chapter of Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR).
The Ahmed Shaam Sufi Group is headed by a medico while the seven member troupe has been into performing arts for the past three odd decades.
The event, inaugurated by Finance Minister Abdul Rahim Rather,
started with a Sufiana Kalam performance by the local artists, after which the visiting artists showcased their talent. The event host and ICCR Regional Director Ayaz Rasool Nazki said the Afghan troupes were so impressed with the “Kashmiri traditions that they want to make it a part of their shows.”
“They are so much impressed with our cultural traditions that they took our own treasure of poetry in Persian, for their performance here,” Nazki said adding the poetry of Shamas Tabreizi and Ghulam Rasool Nazki was also recited.
This was the first big show by ICCR’s JK chapter. The state chapter like other Regional Offices aims to provide artists a platform to showcase their talent within the country and abroad.
Founded in 1950 by Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, country’s first Education Minister, the ICCR “helps formulate and implement policies pertaining to India’s external cultural relations, to foster mutual understanding between India and other countries and to promote cultural exchanges with other peoples.”
