Mehbooba Mufti leads PDP delegation
Srinagar, Oct 29: Leading the party’s peace delegation, opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti Monday reached Kargil on way to restive Zanskar area, a party handout said.
After overnight stay at Kargil, the delegation will leave for Zanskar Tuesday, 240 kilometers further away. Mehbooba is accompanied by senior party leaders Qazi Muhammad Afzal, Nizam-ud-Din Bhat and Tashi Gylson district president Leh.
Mehbooba is scheduled to reach Padam, the headquarters of Zanskar sub-division on Tuesday evening where she would hold meetings with different groups in an effort to promote peace, it said.
Mehbooba, according to party handout, is visiting Zanskar to express solidarity with the victims of recent violence and meet different sections of society there in order to help restore peace and friendly relations between the two communities in the desert hinterland. The government, according to PDP spokesman, had miserably failed to respond to the situation in Zanskar till it resulted in violence against a small defenseless group of people in an area that is known for communal amity and tolerance. He said it was an index of the seriousness of this government about the lives of people that it sent some ministers to Zanskar one month after the initial indications of trouble that had been brewing ever since.
Meanwhile, at Kargil, Mehbooba today visited the family of Sheikh Ahmed Mohammadi the late head of the reputed Islamia School Kargil who passed away recently. She spent some time with the family and conveyed her condolences to them. Mehbooba paid rich tributes to the departed scholar and spiritual leader who she recalled had enriched the life of the region significantly through his selfless services.
