Tulail: Expectant mother loses life as doctors go ‘missing’
Srinagar, Oct 29: In a shocking incident of its kind, an expectant mother has lost her life in north Kashmir’s Tulail block in Gurez on past Sunday allegedly due to the absence of doctors at the Primary Health Center at Sheikhpora—the lone ray of hope for the residents in times of medical emergencies.
Locals told Greater Kashmir that Naani Begum, 36, wife of Muhammad Anwar Khan of Jurniyal Tulail died at around 2 pm on Sunday because of the absence of doctors at the PHC. “The expectant mother was taken to the hospital but there was no doctor there. She died for want of a doctor,” Abdul Aziz Lone, Member Panchayat, Block Tulail told Greater Kashmir over telephone.
He said the doctors left the hospital days before Eid-ul-Adha and were still to attend their duty.
Lone said the PHC in the locality mostly remains out of bounds for the locals because of the absence of doctors on crucial occasions. “They leave us at God’s mercy at times and it is sad that they do it. This is sheer negligence,” he said.
The locals said the doctors were absent from the duty till Monday afternoon despite the end of Eid holidays. “There is no one to look into this anarchy. This is what makes us far-flung and socially disconnected,” Lone said.
Beegum’s death has triggered anger in the area, with locals accusing the Health Department of overlooking their concerns. “The Government has to act and fix the responsibility in the matter. Let the doctors face action for such a grave negligence,” the locals, who have been protesting against the incident for the past two days, said.
They urged the Director Health Services to personally intervene in the matter and ensure that the PHC runs smoothly with round-the-clock presence of medicos.
