Red signal jumpers bash Traffic cop: Police

SYED IMRAN ALI HAMDANI

Srinagar, Oct 30: A few weeks after a VIP escort thrashed Traffic cop when the former was caught jumping red signal, another similar incident occurred Tuesday afternoon when people from an influential family allegedly bashed a man-in-blue at Regal Chowk, police said.
It said the incident occurred when a sedan was caught jumping the red signal in the busy commercial hub. “The moment the traffic cops stopped the sedan for fining, the driver and others sitting inside jumped out and started beating the   cop saying how dare he stop them,” said a police official.  He said the incident triggered altercation between the cops and the opponents, believed to be closely related to a prominent political family, which also runs business ventures.
“The cop could only be rescued by his colleagues,” said a police official adding that Kothi Bagh Police Station has filed a case.
When contacted Superintendent of Police Traffic, Haseeb-Ur-Rehman confirmed that his department got a case filed against the accused.
“Basically, I had instructed my squads to keep an extra eye on visible offences like red signal jumping and use of mobile phones. And in trying to do so the incident took place,” the SP said.
A Sonawar resident claiming to be the sedan driver, however, refuted the police claims and narrated his version of the story. The man said he was stopped by traffic cops for using a headset.
“But before I would clarify my position the cop abused me and beat me,” he said adding he managed taking out his mobile phone to capture a video footage of the incident.
“The video footage clearly shows that the cop is abusing me and trying to attack me,” the man said. “Thereupon some of my friends who were following me came to my rescue and this was how I was saved,” he added.
This is the second such incident in the past two months when a Traffic cop has been allegedly beaten over jumping of traffic signal. Earlier, the escort of a Cabinet minister bashed the cop near TRC square.
Meanwhile the Regal Chowk Traders Association has condemned the “attack on traffic cop who was regulating traffic in the area.”
