Customary meets have upset Kashmiris: Mirwaiz Umar

ZAHID MAQBOOL

Srinagar, Aug 31: A day after the Prime Ministers of India and Pakistan met on the sidelines of Non-Aligned Movement Conference in Tehran, the Chairman of Hurriyat Conference (M) Mirwaiz Umar Farooq urged the two leaders to “move beyond customary meets and start a serious and durable peace process for Kashmir resolution.”
“The customary meetings between the leaders of the two countries have upset Kashmiris. Such meetings between officials and leaders of both countries have turned out to be mere formalities. It is time for the leaders of two countries to move beyond customary meetings and start the process for resolution of Kashmir issue,” Mirwaiz said, addressing people before Friday prayers at Jamia Masjid here. “Both the countries should give shape and direction to the ongoing negotiations to make them meaningful and result-oriented.”
However, the Mirwaiz maintained that APHC has always welcomed the steps taken by the leadership of both countries aimed at betterment of relations between the two countries.
“Kashmir dispute is a main obstacle between the two countries. It is thus in the interest of both the countries to solve the Kashmir issue once for all,” he said.
Mirwaiz said that without the inclusion of Kashmiri leadership in the dialogue process on Kashmir, the talks will not yield any results. “History is witness to how Tashkent, Shimla and Agra agreement between the two countries yielded nothing. Kashmir leadership should be included in the process aimed at resolution of Kashmir issue.”
Castigating the former interlocutors for trying to tangle the Kashmir issue, Mirwaiz said, “We have already rejected their reports. We will not talk to those who play tricks to tangle the issue. They tried to project Kashmir issue as an administrative issue and an issue of governance. But history is witness that it is an issue of aspirations of millions of people and should be resolved according to historical realities and aspirations of the people of J&K.”
On the recent visit of former interlocutors “to get feedback about their report”, Mirwaiz said: “We are not going to fall in their time-buying tactics. We will engage only in result-oriented dialogue involving heads of both countries.”
