Sarpanch killed at Palhallan

Srinagar, Sep 10: Suspected militants Monday evening shot dead a Sarpanch of ruling National Conference (NC) in Pattan area of Baramulla district, police said.
Giving details, a senior police officer told Greater Kashmir that Ghulam Muhammad Yatoo, Sarpanch of Palhallan village was shot dead after he came out of a local mosque Monday evening. “He was shot in the head with a pistol from the point blank range,” the senior police officer said. “We removed him to hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.”
The senior police officer said that initial investigations revealed that the attackers were two. “One boy was seen attacking him and other was giving cover to him,” he said.
Yatoo is survived by two daughters and two sons, besides his wife, the officer said.
The police officer said that the people heard sound of only single fire shot. “Yes the incident has created chaos and panic in the area,” he said and added that village is looking deserted.
Soon after the incident senior police and civil officers reached the spot take the stock of situation.
A local of Pattan told Greater Kashmir over telephone that panic gripped the area and huge contingents of Army and Special Operations Group (SOG) of Kashmir police have cordoned off the area. “They are questioning the people whosoever confronts them,” he said.
