Barwulla inhabitants resent road construction near Wangat stream

Barwulla (Kangan), Sep 11: The inhabitants of Barwulla in Kangan Tehsil have complained that the site plan selected for construction of the road under Prime Minister’s Gram Sarak Yojana (PMGSY) from Kijpora Bridge to their village is not beneficial for their area.
According to the residents, the site selected by the authorities for the construction of the road lies on the banks of Wangat stream and is flood prone. “We welcome the construction of the road, but the site is flood prone area and won’t be beneficial for the people,” the locals told Greater Kashmir.
The residents said that they apprised the senior functionaries in the PMGSY including its Chief Engineer about the possibility of flood threats. “However, the officials didn’t heed to our concerns,” Abdul Rahim Sheikh a village elder told Greater Kashmir. “Though there was already a link road at the site before the year 1993, but flash floods washed away its major portion,” Abdul Qayoom a local told Greater Kashmir, adding the authorities should take that into consideration before starting the construction on the road.
“The road is not only useless to the village, but is will be an environmental disaster,” the locals said. “We demand that the road be constructed between fields which will be more useful for our village,” Qayoom added.
Despite several attempts, Chief Engineer PMGSY could not be contacted.
