Flood waters leave Masjid, widow’s house risky

Riverside walls, compounds washed away in Nawa Kadal

Srinagar, Sep 11:   Recent rains have left a Masjid and adjacent humble dwelling of elderly widow Moughli at the verge of collapse in Nawa Kadal as considerable part of compounds and its walls towards Jhelum have been washed away in the recent rains when water level in the river rose.
Though Moughli and her family comprising daughter and son-in-law have shifted to a safe location, her old house is feared to collapse anytime while similar is the threat to Masjid-e-Khanqah-e-Sokhta. The compounds of the both the buildings were washed away recently.
Though the Irrigation and Flood Control Department (IFCD) has placed some sandbags along the washed away riverside, the locals said the banks need immediate repairs in concrete. “Or else it will lead to devastation,” said the residents under the banner of Intizaamiya Committee of the Masjid.
They also said that a washroom of a nearby house  owned by Ali Muhammad Wani was also damaged due to rise in water levels.
They appealed Chief Engineer IFCD to look into the matter on priority basis even as the locals accused MLA Eidgah of being callous towards the situation which arose because of the recent rains.
