SP College Hostel in troubled waters

GK CITY REPORTER

Srinagar, Sep 13: The hostellers putting up at SP College Hostel in the City have complained of problems on various fronts including “poor sanitation and harassment.”
A delegation of students told Greater Kashmir that the bathrooms were in filthy conditions adding that the water supply too wasn’t proper.
The hostellers said that due to unhygienic conditions, many of them have been falling ill quite frequently.
“Falling ill has become a routine at this hostel as almost everyday some student falls ill and doctors who treat them say the cause was unhygienic conditions of the hostel,” the students said.
They also said that the roofing wasn’t proper because of which rain water often seeps into the rooms.
“During the recent rains, we faced sleepless nights as the water drops trickled into our rooms and entire bedding and other commodities got damaged,” the students said.
The complainants said the washrooms were so filthy that “one fells like nauseating on entering it.”
The students said the school authorities were trying to gag their voice over the hostel mismanagement.
“Just recently a fire extinguisher leaked in the hostel by our mistake we confess it. But instead of asking us to get it refilled, the school principal has ordered us to get a new one which will cost a lot. From where will we get so much of money?” the hostellers asked.
When contacted the college principal Dr Nazir Ahmed Gilkar said there was only some problem with water supply which has been rectified.
“Rest the hostel is functioning smoothly,” the principal said.
To a question on asking students to get a new fire extinguisher instead of getting the gas refilled, he said: “I know refilling would be enough but I asked them to get a new one to make them realize worth of such assets so that they don’t repeat the mischief in future.”
Meanwhile the complainants have appealed Minister for Higher Education to personally look into the matter.
