President to visit Valley on Sep 27
SHABIR IBN YUSUF
Srinagar, Sep 23: After becoming President, Pranab Mukherjee will be on his maiden visit to Kashmir for attending Kashmir University convocation on September 27 here amid tight security arrangements.
The security arrangements for visit of Mukherjee were given final shape Saturday at high level meeting. A senior police officer here said that high level meeting was chaired by Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Dr Ram Lubaya Saturday.
Sources in police said ADGP Lubaya, Saturday chaired a high level meeting at Security Control Room here and reviewed the security arrangements for the President’s visit.
“Tight security arrangements have been put in place for the visit. During the meeting it was decided that area in and around the Kashmir University would be sanitized by Bomb Disposal Squads,” a senior police officer who was the part of the meeting told Greater Kashmir. He added that intelligence wing of police has been asked to deploy their men for under cover surveillance of the area. “The people who will be attending the convocation would be issued the passes,” he added.
However, ADGP Lubaya said security arrangements for such people are always there, but it has not been given final shape yet. “Yet we haven’t got the final engagement programme of President,” ADGP Lubaya told Greater Kashmir. “Once we receive the programme, every arrangement will be made and will be given final shape,” he added. ADGP Lubaya said that at times engagements change at last movement.
Pertinent to mention that this will be Mukherjee’s first visit to the Kashmir Valley after his election as President of India.
Earlier on September 14, Vice president Hamid Ansari arrived on a five-day visit during which he held interaction with governor NN Vohra, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, and attended a function at the University of Kashmir.
