Union cabinet reshuffle on cards

CWC To Meet Today

ANIL ANAND

New Delhi, Sep 24: Gearing up to deal with the political situation emerging after its key ally Trinamool Congress walking out of the ruling UPA, the Congress has started mulling over the possibility of a reshuffle in the Union Cabinet and the party set up. All eyes are on young AICC General Secretary Rahul Gandhi who is expected to get an important slot in the organisation.
Even as there is a buzz of a massive cabinet reshuffle being round the corner, the Congress Working Committee is slated to meet on Tuesday to discuss these key issues. The party’s highest decision making body is also likely to endorse Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh’s determination to push through some major reforms.
Fuelling the fire for impending changing in the government and the organisation, Congress president Sonia Gandhi met top party leaders here on Monday ahead of the crucial CWC meeting. The leaders held parleys with her at 10-Janpath.
Congress sources said that the focus on the cabinet reshuffle will be with an eye on carrying forward the reform agenda which had been stuck due to pressure from some of the allies including Trinamool Congress.
The exit of Trinmool Congress has led to six additional vacancies in the cabinet. It is likely that West Bengal, henceforth unrepresented by a Congressman, is likely to get substantial representation from the party quota. The names of Deepa Dashmunshi and Adhir Choudhury, known detractors of TMC chief Mamata Banerjee and West Bengal PCC chief Pradeep Bhatacharjee are doing the rounds.
