At GMC hospitals, surgery patients at risk
Registrar Anaesthesiologists kept away from work; HOD refuses to obey Principal GMC’s orders
MANZOOR-UL-HASSAN
Srinagar, Sep 27: Patients undergoing surgeries at Government Medical College associated hospitals in Srinagar are feared of having risk to lives as not the senior medicos but those undergoing training as Post Graduates in Department of Anaesthesiology look after most of the cases. Reasons: The Head of the Department Anaesthesiology has refused to let the Registrars resume duties, despite orders from the GMC Principal.
REGISTRARS AWAY
For the past over a week, the Registrars of Anaesthesiology department, who would usually administer cases at the operation theatre, have been replaced by their juniors.
Experts fear that letting the juniors handle the cases could prove detrimental for the life of patients. “Registrars hold a more responsible chair. Making them stay away from work is no less than a criminal offence,” they said.
‘RED-TAPISM INFECTION’
Sources told Greater Kashmir that argument has popped up between the HOD and the Principal GMC over an official communication about the non-acceptance of resignations of the Registrars in the department, who had gone on protests some days back.
“Recently, principal shot a letter to the HOD asking reasons of his reluctance to allow the medicos resume their duties in the department,” the sources said adding that the Minister for Medical Education RS Chib in the know of the matter.
THE GENESIS
Last week around a dozen Registrars tendered their resignation en-masse before the GMC Principal in protest against “callous attitude” of their seniors when a Consultant (on duty) allegedly refused to attend the Registrar's call to treat ailing patients.
However, witnessing the crisis at the SMHS hospital, the principal did not accept their resignation and asked them to resume their duties at the earliest.
“But despite repeated communications from the principal, the HOD refused to take the medicos back,” the sources said.
Prompted by the misconduct of the HOD, the principal is understood to have shot a letter to the Commissioner Secretary apprising him of the development.
Pertinently, the Principal GMC has formulated a 3-member committee comprising of heads of different departments to enquire the allegation levelled by the Registrars.
OFFICIALS SPEAK
When contacted the HOD Anaesthesiology said he had not received any communication from the GMC Principal to let the Registrars resume duties. He however insisted that there was no risk to life of patients.
The GMC Principal, Dr Qazi Masood on the other hand clarified that resignations of the Registrars were not accepted and that they were asked to resume duties at an earliest.
“They(Registrars) have some issues with the department and I have called an inquiry, it will sort out the issues within couple of days,” the Principal said.
