SHIROMANI AKALI DAL PASSES RESOLUTION
PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
Chandigarh, Apr 13: A delegation of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) will soon meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to get the hanging of Devinderpal Singh Bhullar stalled.
A resolution to this effect was passed at the SAD's core committee meeting in Bathinda today, Harcharan Bains, Advisor on National Affairs to Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, told PTI.
A SAD delegation, led by the CM and his deputy Sukhbir Badal, will meet Manmohan Singh and Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde to get Bhullar's hanging stalled, Bains said.
The delegation will urge them "to operationalise the post-judicial mechanism of statesmanship in order to avoid even at this stage any steps that may pose a threat to peace and communal harmony in the country in general and Punjab in particular," he said.
They would also request the President Pranab Mukherjee in this regard, Bains said.
The SAD's core committee said the rejection by the Apex Court of Bhullar's petition for commuting his death sentence was "deeply painful, unfortunate and worrying".
The core committee observed the SC judgment should not be carried out on grounds of health of Bhullar.
"Rushing to carry out the judgment in defiance of this basic humanitarian and legal consideration will send a wrong signal to the people," the resolution said.
"The meeting is of the view that hanging an accused conspirator when the main accused had been acquitted in the case will set a new and undesirable precedent," Bains said.
Nothing should be done that may endanger the hard earned atmosphere of peace and communal harmony in the country in general and Punjab in particular, the resolution said.
The SAD is firmly of the opinion that decisions on issues having a bearing on peace and communal harmony should be taken with extreme and utmost care, Bains said.
