Srinagar, Aug 3: Two militants and an Army soldier were killed in two different encounters on the Line of Control (LoC) and hinterland in frontier district of Kupwara on Saturday, Army said. The number of militants killed in different counter-infiltration operations along the LoC in Kupwara district is 13 in the past six days while Army has been put on high alert.
A senior Army official here said one militant and a soldier were killed while foiling an infiltration bid in Tangdhar sector of Kupwara district. He said Army’s 55 Gorkha Regiment were carrying out searches in Eagle Post area, where one militant was killed Friday. “During the searches in Eagle Post area near the LoC, the hiding militant opened fire on the party that resulted into the killing of a soldier. In the retaliatory fire a militant was also killed,” he said, adding, search operation in the area is going on.
The official said the operation in the area was started when troops along the LoC noticed two militants trying to sneak into Kashmir from across the border on Thursday night. “The militants were challenged by the soldiers and in the ensuing gun-battle, one militant was killed on Friday,” he said. The official said another militant was killed in Maldoori Hafruda forests on Saturday morning by Army’s 21 Rashtriya Rifles.
He said the slain militant was most likely part of the militant group killed in Hafruda two days ago. “He is a foreigner,” the official said. Pertinently five militants were killed when army foiled an infiltration bid in Hafruda forest area of Handwara Thursday while four infiltrating militants were killed in Machil Sector on Tuesday. One militant, the official said, was killed in Keran sector of the Kupwara district on Monday. Five militants were killed in a failed infiltration bid in Keran Sector on July 9.
