Akber cruises to victory

Srinagar, Dec 31: Muhammad Akber of Chinar Cycling Club, Magam cruised to victory in the Tour-de-Gulmarg Snow cycling race held around Gulmarg bowl on Monday.
The event organised by Pine Palace Resorts Gulmarg, was flagged off by Director Tourism Talat Parvez and in it around 20 top cyclists of Valley participated.
Snow Cycling introduced in Valley in 2005 have been regular feature of winter sports calendar since and this year Pine Palace Resorts came forward to organise and sponsor it. To make cycling hassle free and give visitors taste of another kind of winter sport activity, traffic was barred from plying on Gulmarg bowl road. Tourism department, Gulmarg Development Authority had made proper arrangements to make event a success. As the event started, riders using Mountain Terrain Biking (MTB) cycles tested their skills on the road covered by snow.
Muhammad Akber of Chinar Cycling Club emerged winner while as Umer Ahmad of same club finished second. The third place was also bagged by Aamir of Chinar Club.
Speaking on the occasion Akber said, “Only couple of days earlier I was not sure about my participation in the event as I did not had my own MTB cycle. It was only because of ZAZ trading corporation who came forward to sponsor me that I was able to take part and win it”.
Giving details about the event Director Pine Palace, Mir Mudasir said, “This year all the stake holders, GDA, Tourism Department, Hoteliers, Cable Car Corporation, Winter Games Association and others have chalked out joint programme to highlight and organise different events in Gulmarg in proper and coordinated way”.
“As part of joint programme organized different associations in which we invited top 20 MTB cyclists of Valley and I am happy to see event turning out as success,” he said.
