Witty Karunanidhi ( Pic Karunanidhi)
He might have aged but his sense of humour has not diminished. The once film script writer, the DMK patriarch Mr M Karunanidhi is a hot boiled politicians having won many a political battle but his repartees could be a delight for anyone.
Finance Minister Mr P Chidambaram as the new Prime Minister! There has been a murmur within his own party Congress also but no one has dared to publically talk about it. What Congressmen could not do has been done by Mr Karunanidhi. Not only does he see a potential Prime Minister in Mr Chidambaram but did not let the opportunity go to hit at his arch-rival and AIADMK supremo Ms Jay Jayalalitha. Picking up from where film star Kamal Hasan had left, Mr Karunanidhi endorsed his view on Mr Chidambaram’s candidature as he felt the Finance Minister would make a good Prime Minister. He did not stop at that but used the opportunity to puncture Ms Jayalalitha’s claim to the top post. A dhoti-clad Tamil will be a fitting foil to a saree clad Tamil, was his remark, full of sarcasm. The obvious reference was to the Tamil Nadu chief minister who also fancies her chances of becoming Prime Minister. Not to be left behind, the AIADMK leaders were quick to score brownie points. They felt that by doing so Mr Karunanadhi has for the first time acknowledged their leaders claim to the top post.
The ongoing debate over Mr Chidambaram’s suitability as a Prime Ministerial candidate has still left the AICC circles unfazed. No one is daring to even discuss Mr Karunanidhi’s off the cuff views. The obvious fear among Congressmen is that they should not be seen as opposing Mr Rahul Gandhi’s candidature for Prime Ministership. This is despite the fact that there is no indication or a word from the Nehru-Gandhi family scion about his ambitions to become Prime Minister.

Mamta Unconcerned ( Pic Mamta banerji)
Credited with having resisted the hike in passenger fairs in railways, the Trinmool Congress seems to have suddenly lost interest in the Railway Ministry after it parted ways with the UPA. The fact that the Ministry is being headed by a Congressman and a Minister of State is from West Bengal, has perhaps led to Ms Mamta Banerjee losing interest in the Railway functioning. A greater instigation to stay away from railway affairs is the fact that the MoS Adhir Chowdhary is not only from West Bengal but also an old Mamta critic.
A recent letter written by him to all MPs seeking suggestions to make railways more efficient, interestingly invoked no response from Trinmool Congress Members. It is a departure from the fact that these MPs have been the most enthusiastic about issues related to the railway ministry. This is a glaring example of how the political parties and politicians change their colours and that the public interest become secondary to their political preferences.

Troubled Ministry ( Pic Shinde)
Home Minister Mr Shushil Kumar Shinde literally seems to be in a hot seat. Ever since he took over as Home Minister just months back, he has hardly got any time to get versed with the North Block mandarins. First, it was the Delhi gang rape case that kept him distracted from other important issues and now the Indo-Pak build up after killing of two Indian soldiers on LoC.
From all available indications, he is still trying to come to terms with the key issues and is hard pressed for clear cut answers when confronted by the media-persons. During his initial days, he sounded adventurous while dealing with media queries. But the resultant controversies have forced him into a shell.
Think of his response to a question as to why a decision has not been taken on mercy petitions of convicts facing death sentence. “The gang rape case had kept me busy, now I will find time to concentrate on mercy petitions,” was Mr Shinde’s response which utterly amused the press-persons gathered for his monthly briefings.
