COP AMONG 2 HELD FOR ATM FRAUD
Islamabad (Anantnag), Jan 17: Police on Thursday claimed that it achieved a major breakthrough into an ATM fraud nexus by arresting two persons, including a cop, and recovered Rs 1.5 lakh cash and ATMs from their possession.
“The investigation into the case is on and many more arrests are expected,” police said.
The arrested persons were identified as Ghulam Mohhiudin a Special Police Officer (SPO) with the JK police, and his accomplice Tariq Ahmad Wani, of Pulwama district.
Police said that the accused used to wait outside ATM’s of different banks and on pretext of helping people used to operate the ATM machine, and take away their cards.
“The accused after completing the transactions used to replace the ATM cards of the gullible people with fake ones and used to provide the same to them while keeping the original ones with themselves ,” said a police official.
He said that by the time the person realized that his card has been exchanged, the accused had already withdrawn large sums of money from their accounts.
Police said that they received two complaints regarding the nexus after which they immediately swung into action.
“The video footage of the ATM’s provided by different branches of the Jammu and Kashmir bank was shown to the complainants and a manhunt was launched,” said Deputy Superintendent of Police ( Dy SP), Zaheer Jaffar.
He said that the SPO of the JK police believed to be a main accused was arrested from the District Police Lines (DPL), here in Islamabad and his arrest led us to another accused. “The SPO used to shield the gang and helped them in the crime,” said Dysp.
“We have recovered Rs 1.05 Lakh from their possession-moreover 6 ATM cards have also been recovered so far,” the Dy SP said.
He said that it is a large nexus and the accused operate from different parts of the valley. “The investigation has been initiated into the case and FIR number 17/2013 under sections 420 and 380 of the RPC has been registered against the accused.” The investigation is in full swing and we are looking for the other members of the gang,” Dysp added.
