Snow, rains leave roads waterlogged

People face inconvenience, administration caught napping

GK NEWS NETWORK

Srinagar, Jan 17: Few hours of snowfall and rains caused water-logging in many areas of Srinagar causing immense inconvenience to the commuters.
In absence of proper dewatering system, many areas including posh Residency Road, Maulana Azad Road, Polo View and city’s commercial hub Lal Chowk were waterlogged hampering smooth flow of traffic.
In Shaher-e-Khaas, roads in Hawal, Alamgari Bazar, Nowhatta, Nallahmar, Bohri Kadal were water-logged.
In view of forecast of moderate to heavy snowfall due to approaching western disturbance, authorities had claimed to have made all preparations to ensure minimum disruption of normal life. However, few inches of snowfall caught the administration napping while people faced immense hardships.
“Most of the drains in Srinagar are choked in absence of regular cleaning. The problem gets compounded during rains when drain water overflows on roads,” said Nazir Ahmad a businessman while pointing towards water-logged stretch of road near posh Residency Road.
The aggrieved commuters said the concerned authorities should have pressed mobile dewatering pumps into service. “Ironically, the officers have been only participating in meetings on winter preparedness in cozy halls and never bother to make on spot assessment of problems faced by common people,” they said.
Due to snowfall, electricity in various areas including Lal Chowk, Press Enclave, Dalgate, Khayam were snapped for few hours.
