Fresh snowfall brings respite from cold

Srinagar, Jan 24: Fresh snowfall in upper reaches on Thursday has brought some respite from intense cold in Kashmir Valley even as Meteorological Department said that there would be rise in night temperature also.
Met Department officials here said night temperatures across the valley remained below the freezing point. “Minimum temperature in Srinagar was minus 1.8 degree Celsius Thursday, while as the previous night it was minus 3.2 degree Celsius,” Met officials said.
Official said that minimum night temperature recorded in Qazigund area of Kulgam district was minus 6.4 degree Celsius. In Kokernag, he said that the night temperature was recorded minus 8.7 degree.
In Kupwara town of north Kashmir, the minimum was recorded minus 1.7 degree Celsius.
The minimum night temperature in Pahalgam hill resort in south was down by over four notches at minus 11.6 from the previous night's minus 7.0 degree Celsius.
In Gulmarg in north Kashmir, the minimum night temperature settled at minus 10.6 degree Celsius as compared to the previous night's minus 9.6 degree Celsius.
Leh town in the cold desert of Ladakh showed a slight drop in the night temperature from the previous night's minus 19.4 degree Celsius to settle at a low of minus 20.4 degree Celsius.
Inspector General of Police (IGP), Traffic, in an official handout said that subject to fair weather conditions and good condition of road, all kinds of vehicles would be allowed to travel from Srinagar to Jammu on the Highway Friday.
