13 persons get state award

Awardees Include Dr Saleem, Sofi, Shyam Koul

Jammu, Jan 25: Jammu and Kashmir government Friday announced grant of state awards on the eve of Republic Day in favour of 13 persons for rendering meritorious services in the different fields.
Award for bravery including Rs 51000 cash, a medal and a citation was accorded to Vivek Kumar S/o Shamsher Chand R/o Akhnoor, Jammu.
Cash award of Rs 51000, a Shawl worth Rs 10,000 and citation has been granted to Ghulam Nabi Firaq in the field of literature.
Award for performing Arts which includes Rs 51,000 cash besides medal and citation has been granted in favour of N D Jamwal (Painter/Sculptor) and Ali Muhammad (Suma player). While as cash award for excellence in Arts and Crafts of Rs 51,000, a Medal and a citation was granted in favour of Syed Amjid Ali S/O late Syed Hussain R/O Zadibal Srinagar.
The Awards for meritorious public services of Rs 51,000, a Medal and Citation to each awardee has been granted in favour of Atul Daloo, Commissioner Secretary, Tourism and Culture Departments, Showkat Ahmad Mir, Deputy Commissioner, Ganderbal, Dr Sushil Kumar Sharma, Head of Department, Cardiology, Government Medical College, Jammu and Dr Muhammad Saleem Wani, Additional Professor Urology and Kidney Transplant Surgeon, Department of Urology, SKIMS, Srinagar.
Awards for outstanding service under media category of Rs 51,000, a Medal and Citation to each awardee was granted to late Shyam Koul (posthumously), Bashir Ahmad Sofi, Bureau Chief UNI Srinagar and S P Sharma from Tribune Newspaper.

PROFILE OF DR SALEEM WANI
 Hailing from Dana Mazar Safa Kadal locality of Srinagar, Dr Saleem Wani did his MBBS from Government Medical College Srinagar in 1986.
 He started his career in the state’s health department as an assistant surgeon. Later he completed his Masters degree in General Surgery from SKIMS Soura.
 Dr Saleem served the state’s health department as Surgeon Specialist before he appeared for and qualified All India entrance examination for super-specialty course in Urology (MCh) at prestigious Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Varanasi in January 1999.
 He passed the prestigious National Level Diplomat of National Board examination (DNB) in Urology conducted by National Board of examination, Delhi in October 2001, and thus became the first Urologist from the State Possessing Double degree in Urology i.e. DNB and MCh.
 Dr Saleem joined the SKIMS as Assistant Professor in the Urology Department in June 2001.
 He has attended and participated in more than 200 medical conferences, workshops, symposia and CMEs and has presented enumerable papers depicting the path-breaking experiences and research conducted at SKIMS Soura.
 Since the time he joined SKIMS, a lot of advanced and complicated surgeries were performed successfully and most often for the first time.
 He has to his credit all types of complicated surgeries for kidney stone, various urological cancers, reconstructive urology, corrective surgeries for congenital anomalies of urinary tract, endourological procedures for which earlier the poor patients had to take journey to Delhi and Chandigarh.
 He started the minimally invasive laparoscopic surgeries and Key Hole surgeries like PCNL and Lithotripsy at SKIMS and successfully performed the ‘first landmark’ laparoscopic Varicocelectomy.
 He pioneered the Urinary Bladder and Prostate Cancer surgery and research in J&K state and has published more than 35 papers in peer review journals of the world.
 He was invited to Washington, DC, USA to deliver a talk on Bladder cancer research conducted at SKIMS, during AUA conference in May 2011.
 Department of Urology won wide acclaims when Dr Saleem successfully removed a cancerous urinary bladder in a young patient and constructed a new bladder from his small intestines. This mile stone surgery was done in 2002 and since then more than 100 such cases have been performed at SKIMS successfully.
 Dr Saleem has been in the field of Kidney Transplant Surgery at SKIMS and under his stewardship this prestigious and most sensitive program is running successfully and presently one live related kidney transplant is done weekly with excellent results. He is presently working on various Research projects which will change the course of management of bladder tumor, Prostate Cancer and Obstructive Uropathy.
 Dr Saleem is International Member American Urological Association Inc. USA, life member of various prestigious organizations including Societe Internationale d urologie (SIU),Montreal, Canada, Uological Society of India (USI), North Zone Chapter Urological Society of India (NZUSI) and International college of Surgeons.
