SMC celebrates National Voters Day

Srinagar,Jan 25: Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) on Friday celebrated National Voters Day at different polling stations in the summer capital.
 In a statement a spokesperson of SMC said functions were organized at four polling stations SMC’s Central Office, Govt Degree College Bemina, SP College M.A Road, Women’s College, M.A road. The functions were presided over by senior officers of the SMC.
 Commissioner SMC Dr G.N Qasba presided over the function organized at the corporate hall of Municipal Central Office Karanagar.
 Addressing the general public including the youth and BLOs, Dr Qasba said the main objective of National Voters Day is to achieve greater participation of people in the electoral process particularly the newly eligible 18 plus electors.
 “It is our duty to spread awareness among voters of their rights and duties and to empower the youth to instill a sense of pride and confidence among them,” Dr Qasba said.
 Dr Qasba distributed election cards to the concerned BLOS of various constituencies.
 On the occasion, the importance of vote and the National Voters’ Day was highlighted by subject matter specialist Dr Akhter Hussain (Former Professor of Political Science). The session started with introductory note presented by the principal Dr. Nazir Ahmad Gilkar. Among others secretary SMC Hilal Ahmed Diwani was present in the function.
 Meanwhile, Joint Commissioner SMC Fayaz Ahmed Balla presided over the function organized at Degree College Bemina. “Participation of voters is must and vital for free and fair elections and also to inspire youth to exercise their franchise,” Balla said.
