Sheikh's Inconsistency
This refers to Sheikh's Inconsistency (GK January 21, 2013). The leader of Indian delegation Mr. Ayanger feeling helpless in the face of strong advocacy for the right of self- determination of Kashmiris by Zafarullah Khan, in a hand-written note to Sheikh Abdullah suggested independence as a better solution to the problem. It was in that context that Sheikh Abdullah dared to offer it to Dr. Taseer and Choudhary Muhammad Ali who rejected it on the ground that independent Kashmir would be a bed of international conspiracies hanging like a sword on the head of Pakistan. Sheikh Abdullah in 1948-1949 in an interview to a British correspondent suggested independence as a solution to this problem. Sardar Patel objected to his statement and Sheikh Sahib retreated saying that he was thinking aloud. Ayanger's suggestion was a ruse to defer the Security Council resolution of plebiscite. Nehru during his visit to Srinagar in July 1953 in a note to Sheikh Abdullah stated that he would offer Kashmir to Pakistan on a platter rather than agree to independence (Mir Qasim's Dastani Hayat, page 179). Sheikh Abdullah who dreamt of establishing a Kingdom of Muslim majority regions of this state was thrown out of power and imprisoned.
