SHRC seeks report from Police Chief
Asks Divisional Commissioners To Monitor Sale Of Acids
SRINAGAR ACID ATTACK
MANZOOR-UL-HASSAN
Srinagar, Jan 30: The State Human Rights Commission Wednesday directed J&K’s Director General of Police to file a factual report about the acid attack case in Srinagar wherein 30-year-old girl was attacked here with acid earlier this month. The Commission also asked the Divisional Commissioners of Kashmir and Jammu regions to “submit the mechanism by which they monitor the sale, import and storage of various acids in their areas of operation.”
While hearing the petition filed in the case, the Division Bench of the Commission comprising f Javaid Kawoosa and Rafiq Fida today asked the authorities to file their report within a stipulated time.
The bench asked the SHO of Sheergari Police Station, where the FIR was registered, to file the status report before the Commission within a given period of time.
Soon after the acid attack, a human rights group—International Forum for Justice and Human Rights—filed the petition in the SHRC seeking stringent action against the perpetrators. The petition was filed by Chairman of the Forum, Muhammad Ahsan Untoo appealing the Commission to take immediate cognizance of the gruesome act of acid throwing and ensure safety of womenfolk. “These kinds of acts need to be stopped through enforcement of stringent laws,” the petition said. It said the “free sale and availability of acid should be banned and the users should be made accountable.”
The petition further appealed SHRC to issue immediate order considering seriousness of the act.
