SMC kick-starts waste segregation at source

STEP AIMED TO MAKE SRINAGAR GREEN, CLEAN: DR QASBA

Srinagar, Jan 30: Acting on the High Court directions, the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) on Wednesday kick-started segregation of waste at source in the summer capital including Dal lake. 
 The drive was kick-started by SMC Commissioner Dr GN Qasba and chaired awareness programmes in various areas of Srinagar including Dal, Lal Chowk, Hazratbal and Hyderpora.  
 The main function was held at the Western Foreshore Road in Dal ward. On the occasion, Dr Qasba said the SMC is committed provide quality sanitation to people at their doorsteps.
 “It is a historic day for Srinagar city today. It has joined the group of selected cities in the country to get waste segregation at source. We will provide color coded dustbins to people of Srinagar free of cost. We will ensure regular collection of garbage from these dustbins. We need cooperation of people for making Srinagar green and green and this endeavour is a step towards our cherished vision,” Dr Qasba said while addressing a public gathering at WFR.
 Dr Qasba said SMC has started distributing 10,000 color coded green and blue dustbins green to households in the first phase.
 He said the biodegradable waste which includes kitchen waste, vegetables, fruits has to be thrown in green bins while as the non biodegradable like plastic, bottles shall be collected in blue bins to ensure proper and scientific disposal.
 On the occasion, Joint Commissioner (Adm) SMC Fayaz Bala said the Corporation has made state-of-the-art arrangements for scientific disposal of garbage at Achan garbage dump.
 Later Dr Qasba held an interaction with people and assured to resolve all their genuine problems at the earliest.
 The Chairman of Nigeen Lake Conservation Organisation (NLCO) Manzoor Ahmad Wangnoo hailed the SMC especially Dr Qasba for his efforts to improve sanitation in the City. “These colour coded bins have been installed in foreign countries. I appreciate Dr Qasba for introducing the concept in Srinagar city. We assure all support to SMC in the endeavour,” Wangnoo said. 
 Chairman Houseboat Owners Association Muhammad Azim Tuman and president Dal Dwellers Welfare Union Ghulam Rasool also hailed the SMC for collecting of waste at source.
 “This will definitely help to keep Dal lake and its adjoining areas clean during the peak tourist season,” Tuman said.
 SMC’s Ward Officer for Dal Nazir Ahmad highlighted works undertaken by the SMC in the area.
 Among others, Secretary SMC Hilal Ahmed Diwani, Chief Sanitation Officer Manzoor Ahmed Tarray, were present on the occasion.
 Last year the J&K High Court had directed the State government to strictly comply with the provisions of the Environment (Protection) Act 1986. A division bench comprising Chief Justice MM Kumar and Justice Hasnain Massodi while passing directions on a Public Interest Litigation asked the government to comply with the provisions of the Act in letter and spirit.
