SHAME: 7th grade student drugged, raped in Shopian
Shopian, Jan 3: A 13 year old girl in this South Kashmir district has accused a youth of abducting, drugging and later raping her. The shocking incident, according to the family members occurred about a month back but the social stigma attached with the act and the threat perception from the accused, prevented the family from reporting it to the police.
Police sources said the family of the victim came up with a formal complaint the other day after which a case was registered and the accused arrested.
The incident has come to fore at a time when the state government is contemplating to modify the existing laws against rape in the state by incorporating provision of capital punishment for sexual offence against women in the wake of an outrage in the country over the gang-rape and murder of a student in Delhi.
According to police reports, a 13 year old girl, studying in class 7th, was allegedly abducted by one Shahid Ahmad Wani son of Manzoor Ahmad Wani of Aliyalpora, Shopian on November 25, 2012 and taken to his home, where he was alone at that moment.
“The boy forcibly drugged the girl at his home and when she fell unconscious; Wani outraged her chastity,” police reports quoted the victim as saying.
They said the girl after gaining consciousness raised an alarm and shouted for help and the neighbors rushed to the spot but found the door locked.
“The girl was rescued from the clutches of the boy only after the family of the boy returned and unlocked the house”, police reports said.
They said that the family did not report the matter to the police then, as they wanted to bury the issue given the social stigma attached with the act and the fear of reprisal from the culprit.
However, the family of the accused was found missing the very next day of the act and according to the family of the victim, they started receiving threatening phone calls from Delhi numbers, warning them of dire consequences if they reported the matter to the police.
“They threatened us of leaking the video clip of our daughter over the internet if we reported the case to police,” family members of the victim told the police.
However, on January 1, the family members of the culprits, barged into the victims house with some goons and again intimidated them prompting them to report the matter to the police.
The family consequently lodged a complaint with the police and an FIR was lodged in the matter.
Police has lodged an FIR, bearing number 01/2013 under sections 342 and 376 of the RPC, into the matter and the arrested the accused.
“We are investigating the case and will make sure that the case is investigated in a time-bound manner,” said Superintendent of Police (SP) Shopian, Mumtaz Ahmad.
He said police will ensure that speedy justice is done to the family.
In a similar incident on November 11 last year a girl from Kanjimulla village of Shopian district had accused her cousin and his three accomplices of abducting and later raping her.
The girl had alleged that the accused abducted her in the evening from the compound of her house after which they took her to unknown destination, beat her, drugged her and then gang-raped her. The incident had triggered widespread protests in the area after which all the accused were arrested and the Challan produced in the court.
The local court recently denied the bail to the accused.
