A case for action

The shocking incident of acid throwing on the face of a girl in Srinagar on Wednesday demands societal action at several levels. It is not just this incident that has created a wave of anger and anxiety, a lot happens in Kashmiri society today that needs correction. Foremost, Kashmiris need to take a look at its very family unit, the way its children are brought up and the cultural and social exposures they are subjected to. Then the society as a whole needs to introspect and take a look at the environment that it is providing to its children. The aggressive and unethical electronic media needs particular attention. India's electronic media has transcended boundaries generally seen as healthy for civilised societies. Most of the entertainment media thrives on a culture of negativity, which is manifested by depiction of violence and negative social stereotypes. All this environment impacts the minds of our youngsters in profound ways. What happened in Srinagar on Wednesday is just one reflection of such an environment and the kind of attitudes it breeds. Kashmiri society has a moment to decide what kind of entertainment media it allows in its homes and the kind of checks and balances it requires. At the level of law enforcement there is a need to take a re look at our laws and the way they are implemented. Of course law enforcing agencies cannot be everywhere to ensure that incidents like these do not occur but it needs to look at its systems and try to understand whether they play a role in breeding violence and negativity in the society. At this moment the system needs to demonstrate that crimes like this will not go unpunished and that it will act to ensure deterrence. For this, a quick action on the incident of acid throwing, punishing the guilty in the most severe way possible, would be required.
