Reducing punishment
This refers to the draft bill presented by Congress to the Verma committee for enhancement of punishment for rape. The Congress in its bill has proposed to increase the punishment upto 30 years. It is very strange that Section 376 of Indian Penal Code which prescribes punishment itself empowers the court to impose life imprisonment to those accused of rape. It seems as if Congress is preposing to reduce the punishment.
